Sultanate observes World Anti-drugs Day
MUSCAT — Dr Muna bint Salim al Jardania, Education Ministry Under-Secretary for Education and Curricula, yesterday presided over the opening of a national seminar to mark the World Anti-Drugs Day which falls on June 26 every year. The seminar, organised by the National Committee for Combating Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances at Crowne Plaza, focused on this year’s slogan ‘Addicts Rehabilitation is the Responsibility of All’.

Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed al Saidi, Health Ministry Under-Secretary for Health Affairs, spoke about the situation of drugs in the Sultanate and the condition of addicts whose number in 2008, he said, stood at 1,826 of whom 1,345 were registered at the Ibn Sina Hospital records.  The Sultanate, observing its cultural and humanitarian role, has supported international activities and organisations combating drug trafficking and drug abuse, Dr Ahmed said.

He added that Oman took practical steps, the most prominent of which was the issuance of Royal Decree No 17/99 promulgating the narcotics law which organises procedures to deal with the problem in many ways, including the drafting of preventive and curative plans and the training of specialised personnel to detect addicts and provide curative treatment to them. The event will continue for three more days at the main training centre of the Directorate-General of Human Resources.
