GUtech presentation focuses on
careers in Applied Geosciences

MUSCAT — The German University
of Technology in Oman (GUtech) hosted a public Careers Evening focusing on
its four-year BSc degree programme in Applied Geosciences. The talk, titled
‘Studying the Wonders of our Planet and How to Use and Protect our
Resources, was held at GUtech’s Al Athaiba campus yesterday.
“Geosciences is a very attractive programme of study in this region. If you
want to learn more about oil and gas and how it is formed inside the Earth,
Geosciences could be the right field for you. The GUtech programme focuses
on oil, gas, minerals and water management. These are still the main sources
of income for the Gulf region,” said Professor Dr Janos L Urai, Head of the
Department of Applied Geosciences and Professor for Geosciences at RWTH
Aachen University.
An experienced academic, researcher and consultant, Prof Urai has worked at
different universities in the US, Australia and for Shell in Holland. During
the past ten years, he has been involved in several research projects in
Dhofar and in Dakhiliya region, especially in Al Jabal al Akhdhar.
During the public presentation Professor Urai elaborated on the
everyday-work of geoscientists and gave examples of future career paths.
GUtech’s programme of Applied Geosciences focuses on water, oil, gas and
minerals. “Geoscience is a really fascinating science. All around us you see
geological processes. To study Geosciences you need knowledge of biology,
chemistry, physics and mathematics,” said Mohammed al Harthy, gas
exploration manager at Petroleum Development Oman (PDO).
“Geoscience is still a male dominated field, however most of our students
are female, we would like to encourage female students to become
Geoscientists and discover our planet,” said Urai.“Our programme in Applied
Geosciences is tailor-made for the Gulf region and it includes several
field-trips in and outside Oman,” he added. |
