SQU students showcase ‘Indian
culture’
By A Staff Reporter
MUSCAT — As part of its
efforts to bridge cultures, the English and Translation Society (ETS) at
Sultan Qaboos University recently organised ‘Indian Cultural Night,’
showcasing the rich cultural heritage of India. An exhibition was held in
the morning, which brought a feel of India to SQU by means of eight
different sections namely Indian civilisation, sports, tourism, cinema,
social life, Indo-Oman relations, and identity. The ETS members explained
different aspects of Indian traditions and culture to the visitors.
The exhibition was effective in conveying the literary traditions, tourism
potential, political scenario and the cultural aspects of India. The evening
programmes started with the playing of national anthems of both India and
Oman. Thereafter, the society members enacted a play that presented some
aspects of the Indian culture in an entertaining and informative way. The
theme of the play centered on two Omani friends visiting India for the first
time. The play was supplemented with video footages on the food and dressing
traditions of India.
Footage of Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation, addressing the
community, was also screened. The stage was decorated with images of Taj
Mahal and traditional Indian shops. At the end, a number of Indian dance
items were staged by Nrityanjali Dance School students. Mesmerising dance
performances successfully conveyed a true Indian feel to the audience. The
Indian Cultural Night was the fourth cultural night organised by the ETS.
Japanese, Spanish, Syrian and Omani Cultural Nights were organised in the
previous years. ETS is a student group promoting literary and cultural
activities among students. |
