Second forum for statisticians begins

MUSCAT — Under the auspices of His Highness Sayyid Kamil bin Fahd al Said, the second forum for statisticians, organised by the Consultative Committee for Statistics, yesterday kicked off at Grand Hyatt Muscat. The ceremony was attended by ministers and under-secretaries. HH Sayyid Kamil said the aim behind this forum is to discuss the economic developments and how to apply them. He pointed out that the forum targets all statistics professionals in government departments, universities, private colleges and other sectors. He said the forum plays a great role in preparing the socioeconomic statistical plans in different levels.

The forum is expected to encourage statisticians, raise public awareness and encourage the qualified cadre to work in statistics, which is the backbone of the economy, without which no plans cannot be developed. Mohammed bin Nasser al Khusaibi, Secretary-General of the National Economy Ministry and Chairman of the Consultative Committee for Statistics, in a speech pointed out that the Consultative Committee for Statistics endeavours to develop statistical work in the Sultanate by implementing the national statistical strategy to provide high quality data and improve its use in development planning and follow-up.

He added that the organisation of this forum comes in continuation of the plans of the Consultative Committee for Statistics related to implementation of the national strategy and discuss themes that cover the latest developments which may contribute to promoting statistical work in Oman. The forum also includes working papers to discuss these themes based on long experiences in this field. Al Khusaibi announced an award for the best integrated statistical system that meets the requirements of different stages of the statistical system.

He also pointed out that the mechanism for the competition for this award will be laid down and notified to the respective authorities. HH Sayyid Kamil honoured outstanding statisticians. The initiative comes in bid by the Consultative Committee for Statistics to encourage them to exert more effort in the field of administrative work. The first session included three working papers on how to build a national integrated statistical system, integrating the sector statistics and capacity building and access to analysis as an added value for developing the statistical work.

The second session included two working papers on the importance of statistical data in preparing human resources reports and the role of statistics in planning. The forum aims at enhancing ties among all stakeholders in statistical work, allow statisticians to exchange expertise and address the issues that face the statistical work in the Sultanate. As many as 300 participants representing different government departments in statistical and IT fields as well as statistics experts, media men, business reporters and research officials in private sector companies are taking part in the forum. — ONA
