THAMRAIT —
The 7th annual camel racing festival of Dhofar thoroughbreds al Mizaynah and Mihlabah concluded here yesterday.  The closing ceremony was presided over by Shaikh Amir bin Salim Kashoub, Wali of Thamrait. The six-day event, which began on Saturday, was organised by the Royal Court Affairs, represented by the Royal Cavalry.

The 12th stage of the race was held in the Wilayat of Thamrait in the Dhofar Governorate. About 100 she-camels from ‘Al Hizami and non-Al Hizami’ category took part in the contest. The ceremony was attended by Shaikh Ali bin Mubarak al Mukhaini, Director-General of the Royal Cavalry and chairman of the festival organising committee, members of the Majlis Addawla and Majlis Ash’shura and local dignitaries and citizens.

On Sunday, about 1,050 camels took part in the Al Mizaynah pageant. The competing camels were put in seven groups, which were ‘Al Mafarid’, ‘Banat Al Laboon’, ‘Al Madharib’, ‘Al Yad’a’, ‘Al Thanaya’, ‘Al Kibar’ and ‘Al Jumlah’ groups. First place in ‘Al Mafarid’ event was won by a camel named ‘Fazah’, owned by Musalam bin Ahmed Masan from the Wilayat of Thamrait. In ‘Banat Al Laboon’ category, ‘Suwaidah’ she-camel, owned by Shaikh Musalam bin Mohammed Masan from the Wilayat of Thamrait took first place.

In ‘Al Madharib’ category, a camel named ‘Biraiq’h’, owned by Ahmed bin Said Masan from the Wilayat of Maqhshan, came first.  In ‘Al Yad’a’, a she-camel named ‘Al Haeilah’, owned by Shaikh Mubarak bin Musalam Jidad Al Katheri from the Wilayat of Thamrait came first. In ‘Al Thanaya’ category, a she-camel named ‘Mujmalah’, owned by Shaikh Saad bin Manif Khawar, from the Wilayat of Thamrait won first place, while the top title in ‘Al Kibar’ category went to ‘Al Sheikha’ she-camel, owned by Mubarak bin Said al Sha’sha’ie from the Wilayat of Thamrait.

The camel pageant event was won by a she-camel owned by Shaikh Saad bin Manif Khawar from the Wilayat of Thamrait. In non-racing events, special competitions were organised for three-age groups — ‘Bikar, Thanu, and Kibar’ — were allocated for ‘Al Hizami and non-Al Hizami’ she-camels. — ONA
