‘Oman-Iran relations based on mutual respect’

Iranian President Dr Mahmoud Ahmadinejad received in
Tehran yesterday Maqbool bin Ali Sultan, Minister of
Commerce and Industry and head of the Omani side at the
 Oman-Iran Joint Economic Committee meetings.

TEHRAN — The Sultanate and Iran signed here yesterday a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the development of cooperation in economic, commercial, industrial, energy, investment and transport fields. The MoU was signed by Maqbool bin Ali Sultan, Minister of Commerce and Industry, and Manouchehr Mottaki, Iran's Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The MoU was signed after the 12th meeting of Oman-Iran Joint Economic Committee. The two sides stressed the need to increase commercial exchange by 10 times to a total worth of $2 billion. Maqbool said that the Omani side made many investments in the field of shipping, energy (gas) and it hopes to upgrade the level of such investments during trade talks.

Mottaki said relations between the Sultanate are based on mutual respect. He described the meeting with His Majesty Sultan Qaboos and Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad as historic. The summit meeting, he said, opened wide scopes for the development of bilateral relations day by day. Four major areas of bilateral co-operation are trade, shipping, industry and energy, said Mottaki, hoping that commercial exchange will grow from the current $200 million to 2 billion next year. — ONA
