Conference on microbiology and
control of infection opens
MUSCAT — The Health
Ministry, represented by the Microbiology Department at the Royal Hospital,
organised at the Crowne Plaza Hotel yesterday, in collaboration with the
Scientific Committee for Microbiology at the Oman Board for Medical
Specialities, the 1st Scientific Conference on Microbiology and Control of
Infection under the auspices of Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed al Saidi,
Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Health Affairs.
The two-day conference seeks to review the latest developments on anti-germs
and resistant bacteria, hospitals vulnerability to infection and the latest
protection measures against infections in hospitals. Dr Al Saidi said
infectious diseases are still threatening despite major advancements made in
their control and treatment. “Disease infection results in increase of
mortality cases and morbidity ratio which add to the economic burden on the
health care system,” he noted. He called for paying more attention to health
systems and the importance of controlling infections contracted in
hospitals.
For her part, Dr Amina bint Khalfan al Jardaniyah, Senior Consultant and
Head of Microbiology Department at the Royal Hospital and Chair of the
Conference, said that the infectious diseases which might surface anytime
like the A’H1 N1’, SARS and bird flu hinder social and economic development.
“The annual conference seeks to debate and share the latest developments in
diagnostic microbiology,” she added. Eleven lecturers from the UK, France
and an Omani specialist will deliver lectures during the conference. — ONA |
