MUSCAT —
Dr Shashi Tharoor (pictured), India’s Minister of State for External Affairs, who is currently visiting the Sultanate, will meet a representative group of social media enthusiasts at the Indian Embassy this evening. The 'TharoorMuscatMeetUp', as today's event is dubbed, has been organised by the Oman Twitter community. During the meeting, scheduled to begin at 7pm, Dr Tharoor will sign an OmanTweeps poster showcasing over 100 Twitter users of Oman and answer queries from the gathering.

About 30 representative Twitterers (also called Tweeps) will meet Dr Tharoor who is the first Indian to have over 100,000 followers and currently has about 639,845 Twitter users at last count.  An avid Twitter user, Dr Tharoor has been sharing his personal and professional experiences online in a succinct and eloquent manner. He interacts with his followers online and engages them with his wisdom and opinions.

“Meeting him in Muscat is a dream come true for the Twitter community of Oman and the entire programme has been organised by interactions on Twitter. Follow the TharoorMuscatMeetUp tag on Twitter for a complete set of interactions,” a representative of the social media community said. Although Oman's Twitter community can be estimated to have well over 200 members (both English and Arabic users), about 50 are quite active online on Twitter, sharing their knowledge and helping each other in real time.

This community has professionals from various sectors such as government, finance, telecom, media, public relations, retail, publishing, art, market research, event management, software, and academia. Dr Tharoor was formerly Senior Adviser to the Secretary-General of United Nations, as well as former UN Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information. He is on an official state visit as an invited guest of the Government of Oman.
